Digital Arrest (FedEx) Scam: How the Script Works and What to Do

Mahesh·December 31, 2025

Updated 23 August 2026. “Digital arrest” is a fraud script, not a lawful police procedure. Scammers impersonate courier companies, police, customs, telecom or investigative agencies, then use fear and isolation to pressure a victim into transferring money.

What to do immediately

  • End the call. Do not stay on video, do not share your screen and do not install a remote-access app.
  • Do not transfer money for “verification”, “bail”, “safe custody” or to prove that funds are legitimate.
  • If money has already moved, call India’s financial cyber-fraud helpline 1930 as quickly as possible and submit the complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
  • Save transaction IDs, phone numbers, chat screenshots and account details. Do not edit the evidence.

How the FedEx or courier version of the scam works

The call often starts with an automated message claiming that a parcel linked to your identity contains illegal items. A supposed courier employee then “transfers” the call to an official. The next person may appear in uniform on video, show a fake identity card or send forged documents. The aim is to make the conversation feel like a real investigation before the victim has time to verify anything independently.

The script usually relies on four pressure techniques: authority (“we are police/CBI/customs”), urgency (“act now”), isolation (“do not tell family or your bank”), and financial proof (“move your money so we can verify it”). Those are warning signs, not legal procedure.

Red flags that should end the call

  • You are told that you are under “digital arrest” or must remain continuously on a video call.
  • You are threatened with immediate arrest unless you transfer funds.
  • You are told not to contact family, a lawyer, your bank or the local police station.
  • You are asked to move money to a “safe account”, “government account” or “verification account”.
  • You are asked to share an OTP, UPI PIN, card PIN, CVV, screen or banking login.

If you already paid

Speed matters. Contact 1930 and your bank or payment provider immediately. Ask the bank to record the transaction as suspected fraud and follow its dispute process. Then complete the online complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Keep the acknowledgement number. A report does not guarantee recovery, but rapid reporting gives banks and law-enforcement systems a better chance to trace or freeze funds.

How to verify a real law-enforcement contact

Do not use the phone number or link provided by the caller. End the conversation and independently find the official agency website or local police contact. If a caller claims a criminal case exists, you can ask for the station, officer name, case/FIR details and a written notice, then verify those details through an official channel.

Why intelligent people still get trapped

The scam is designed to overload judgment. The victim is made to believe that delay itself is dangerous. Good prevention therefore is not “be smarter”; it is having a pre-decided rule: no authority gets money, OTPs or remote access through an unexpected phone or video call.

Editorial basis

This guide is written as a defensive, India-focused response guide. It does not claim a personal incident unless that experience is documented, and it does not guarantee recovery after fraud. Official reporting and payment/identity sources take priority over anecdotes.
