A personal-finance app can be useful without being the right place to trust with every permission or every rupee. In India, start by identifying what the app actually does—budgeting, lending, investing, payments, credit information or account aggregation—because different activities have different risks and regulatory expectations.
1. Identify the regulated activity
An attractive app interface is not a regulator. If the app offers securities investing, check the relevant SEBI-registered entity and intermediary details. If it offers a loan, identify the actual regulated lender. If it moves payments, understand which bank/payment partner and payment rail are involved.
2. Check fees before features
Look for account fees, brokerage, platform charges, withdrawal charges, loan processing fees, late fees and subscription tiers. For investing, also consider statutory charges and taxes that may sit outside the app’s headline pricing.
3. Review permissions and data sharing
A budgeting app may request SMS access to categorise transactions; a lending app may request more. Ask whether each permission is necessary for the function you want. Review the privacy policy for retention, third-party sharing, deletion and grievance contacts.
4. Separate convenience from advice
Charts, nudges and “insights” can influence behaviour. A personalised-looking notification is not necessarily regulated investment advice. Understand whether the app is giving education, execution, distribution or advice and who is responsible for that service.
5. Protect the account
- Use a unique password or passkey where supported.
- Secure the email and mobile number linked to the account.
- Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs or remote-control access.
- Turn on transaction alerts and review linked bank mandates.
6. Test the exit path
Before committing significant money, find out how to withdraw, close the account, export statements and raise a complaint. A service is easier to judge when you understand how to leave it.
